pub/facslog2.2/README

Contains information on the FACSLOG software for tracking usage of
HP 310 and HP 340 Workstations running the HP Pascal 3.1/3.2X operation
system. These are the computers which were sold with Becton Dickinson
FACS Instruments from around 1986 to 1993 or so. The software was
written by me, and I have no formal ties to Becton Dickinson, except as
a customer like you.

The software is copyrighted but freely copyable for educational
institutions and non-profit organizations. There is no warantee of any
kind - use it at your own risk. However, I have tried to make it as
safe to use as possible. Please send questions, comments, and bug
reports to me by e-mail.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The current version is 2.2. Here are some of the differences between
this version and the last:

1. No "License" or "Registration" information will appear on the screen
in any of the programs.

2. Secures the PASSWORDS (name now shortened to PASSWDS) and EDITLOG
programs by requiring that the logged-in user have a group or lab
affiliation of ADMIN. This means that you can place those programs on
your hard drive and place an entry in Master Page. Only users who have
the affiliation, "ADMIN" can use them.

3. Fits screen output to your monitor, whether you use the small (12")
or large (16") HP monitors with your system.

4. Allows an opening "Welcome" or "News" screen(s) to be displayed
and held after login. Pressing Return restores MasterPage. Previously,
Master Page would come up too fast to view the displayed "news".

5. What was previously the 'Lab or P.I.' field in the programs is now
called 'Group'; however, it is used in the same way as before.

6. The manual has been re-written to include the nuances of HFS file
systems and Master Page.

All the programs will use existing usage-log files (FACSLOG and
CURRENT), but the password data files (PW and PW.BAK) are now renamed
with an A at the end (PWA and PWA.BAK).

Please see the documentation (instructions below) and the
"pub/facslog2.2/buglist" file for more details.

"ftp" to cell.pathology.ufl.edu (128.227.210.102). (FACSNET users,
choose "UNIX" for the remote machine.) Login as user "ftp" and enter
"ftp" for a password. I strongly recommend working from a PC or Unix
machine, as opposed to your HP Pascal Workstation, because you can get
the one-file compressed archive and the transmission will go much
quicker. Later, you can effect a more "local" connection and put the
individual files on your HP after unpacking or uncompressing the
archive. (Note that you do need FACSNET for the final transfer to the
HP; other means of transfer have not been able to produce the required
"codefile" type for programs under the Pascal Workstation System.)

If you're working from FACSNET:
-------------------------------
Choose the "BINARY" file type. Change to the directory
"pub/facslog2.2". Make a local directory called #11:/APP/LOGIN. Copy
LOG, PASSWDS, EDITLOG, and PRNTLOG to it. Get the documentation too -
see below...

If you're working from a PC:
----------------------------
Set the binary transfer type, change directories to "pub/facslog2.2" and
get the files FLOG2_2.ZIP. Unzip it with PKZIP 2.04 and use FACSNET
to put the files into the directories as described above. Get the
documentation too - see below...

If you're working from a Unix system:
------------------------------------
Set the binary transfer type, change directories to "pub/facslog2.2" and
get the file flog2_2.tar.Z. Use the Unix "uncompress" utility to
uncompress the files, then run:

tar -xvf flog2_2.tar

to extract the individual files. Copy them to their respective
directories on the HP 310/340 using your FACSNET software, as described
above. Get the documentation too - see below...

If you're working from a Mac:
----------------------------
I don't have a MAC. If you can't use any of the files described above,
send me a note by e-mail and I'll see what I can do.

The manual was written with a Windows word processing program. It is
stored in the pub/facslog2.2/documents directory. Use the "binary"
transfer type - these are not plain text files. There are several
versions available:

flog22.wp for Word Perfect 5.1/5.2
flog22.doc for Microsoft Word 6.0
flog22.rtf ("Rich Text" format - should be readable by many systems)
flog22.ww2 for Microsoft Word for Windows 2.0

Get one of the above if you can read it with your favorite word
processor. If not, I have also formatted the output of the word
processor for several printers. Get the compressed versions if you can
handle them; if not, the Laser Jet is preferred. The Paintjet version
is *really big* (about 3MB uncompressed) - choose that one only if you
have NO other choice. The .zip suffix indicates PKZIP 2.04 format; the
.Z suffix, Unix "compress":

LaserJet II printer:	MANUAL.LJ
			man_ljet.zip
			manual.lj.Z

ThinkJet printer:	MANUAL.TJ
			man_tjet.zip
			manual.tj.Z

PaintJet printer:	MANUAL.PJ
			man_pjet.zip
			manual.pj.Z

To print the uncompressed versions from your HP Workstation, use the
Filer program. Be sure you have lots of ink and paper, the manual is
about 30 pages long (it's *very* comprehensive). Click on "Ask Me" in
Master Page and enter "*FILER". Press "F" for "Filecopy" and enter the
name as above (e.g. "MANUAL.PJ") for the source and "PRINTER:" (all
caps and note the colon!) as the destination. When you get a warning,
"Translate should be used for serial devices, continue Filecopy?",
press "Y" to go on. Press "Q" to "Quit" the Filer when you're done.

			    HOW TO INSTALL IT
			    *****************

I recommend reading the manual before proceeding, but for you veterans,
some brief instructions follow:

You can make entries in Master Page for the 4 programs (LOG, PRNTLOG,
EDITLOG, and PASSWDS) by selecting 'Add your application' from the BD
menu. Specify the name and the program file for each:

NAME FILE
---------	--------------------
LOGOUT #11:/APP/LOG/LOG
EDIT LOG	#11:/APP/LOG/EDITLOG
PRINT LOG	#11:/APP/LOG/PRNTLOG
PASSWORDS	#11:/APP/LOG/PASSWDS

For a new installation, click on PASSWORDS. You will briefly see a
warning that the FACSLOG file doesn't exist, but the program will start
anyway. Press "A" to add a password for yourself. Use "ADMIN" (no
quotes) for the group. Press "E" to end. After this, you must be
logged in to enter/remove passwords for yourself or your users.

If you are upgrading, use your old PASSWORDS program to create an entry
for yourself with the affiliation, "ADMIN" (without the quotes, of
course) in your existing PW file. Then copy
"#11:/WORKSTATIONS/SYSTEM/PW" to "#11:/WORKSTATIONS/SYSTEM/PWA".

If you want a "welcome" screen to be displayed following login, use the
HP Program, "Editor" to create the text you want in a file called
"#11:/WORKSTATIONS/SYSTEM/OPENING.TEXT".

OK, you're ready to start it up: click on LOGOUT. If you were logged
in, you will be logged out. In new installations, some data files will
be created. Log in with your initials and password for the "ADMIN"
entry. If all is well, you will be logged-in and Master Page will come
back up on the screen.

Subsequent startup can be performed by clicking on LOGOUT whenever the
computer has finished booting, or you can edit the AUTOSTART file and
add an instruction to automatically execute "#11:/APP/LOG/LOG" just
before the instruction to execute Master Page.

Please see the manual for more details.

If you are not using an HFS disk-based system:
---------------------------------------------
The program files may be copied to any volume where there's space, but
some space is required on #11: for data files - 300 free blocks should
be a comfortable amount. OPENING.TEXT, if you use it, must be on #11:
as well. Do not fill your #11: completely, either. At least 1 block
must remain free at all times.

If you don't use Master Page, at least put the LOG program on volume
#11: so you don't have to specify the volume number each time you log
out. You may also find it convenient to add ".CODE" to the names of
the programs using the Filer; otherwise, you need to put a period at
the end of each program file name when "eXecuting".
