Once again, we bring you our Newsletter, full of information about our most recent events. In this edition, we list our usual features of activities and previous and forthcoming meetings as well as student exchanges that have taken place to date.
In this edition, we also include more information detailing the approval of some European Programmes. The RUBYUNE-1 project deals with the study of Training Needs in Biopathology, the elaboration of Permenant Educative Material, conclusion of the Modernisation of Short Courses and the promotion of the European Sectorial Network. We have resulted in the allowance of the RUBYUNE-2 project as the framework for a European student and staff exchange programme in Biopathology. We have incorporated the ALFA programme with the aim to promote the training experience of exchanges in Oncology, with Latin America.

LEONARDO Informative Meeting
Organised for the Fundación Universidad Empresa de Valladolid (FUEVA), this meeting had the same objectives, for the presentation of the results of Spain, and the repurcussion of the 1995 LEONARDO Meeting. It was based on the specific facts of the detected deficiences in the different projects, like the method of setting up new meetings for 1996.
Regional Meeting of Pathologists
With the motive of the Regional Meeting of Pathologists of the North Centre of Portugal, TATIANA was invited to present the RUBYUNE-1 project, in the presence of this society. This project benefits from the participation of IPATIMUP (Instituto de Pathology y Imunologia Molecular da Universidad do Porto) as a partner, and with their representatives, to discuss the lines of action to be derived from the making of the framework of the project.
Thus, this displacement permits a first intial contact with representatives of the University of Coimbra in relation with their participation in the NEWTON-ALFA Network.
Within the LEONARDO Programme we approved a project of visits and exchanges with the aim of covering the transition between the different programmes of European exchanges. In total 13 students have benefited from these grants.
Rafael Lozana Duarte
Qualified in Business Studies at the Oviedo University, Rafael began a training period for Transfesa, Dagenham (UK), where he acheived monitoring and control of the traffic of materials for Ford Motor Company between the United Kingdom and Spain.
Ramón Díaz Trelles
Ramón, a graduate in Biology from the University of Oviedo, has completed a three month practical placement in the International Institute of Genetics and Biophysics, Naples (I). He studied the molecular identification of glutamate receptors in embryonic mesencephalon.
Cristina López Coteralo
After finishing her studies in Medicine at the University of Oviedo, Cristina is completing her practical placement in the Institut fur Pathologie der RWTH of Aachen (D). She will work on the determination of the presence of stress proteins in the gastric mucus.
Jorge Hernández Renner
Jorge is undertaking a practical placement with AT&T, Brussels (B) after his graduation in Business Studies at the University of Extremadura. His work consists of Information Management and analysis and investigation of the regional activities in this enterprise.
Claudia Melchioni
Claudia has qualified in Biology from the University of Pavia. She was recently incorporated into the Aster Biotechnologuies, La Gaude (F) where she learnt the new techniques in flow cytometry and study of the cellular proliferation in advanced solid tumours.
Eva Lombas García
A graduate in Chemistry from the University of Oviedo, Eva is applying her practical experience in IFA, Tulln (A). Her training programme includes the study of New Extraction Techniques for Organic Micro-Pollutants.
Begoña Castro Feo
Begoña, has gained a degree from the University of Pais Vasco. She graduated in Biology, and has initiated a period of practical at the Institut Curie, Paris (F). During this time she has worked with hydration techniques "in situ" and the study of neoplasias.
Elena Martínez Pin
A graduate in Information Studies in Oviedo, she has started a practical placement in the Open Learning Unit, Liverpool (UK). She is following the process of development of multimedia systems and the management of software appliances on the MACINTOSH package.
Inmaculada Mateos Blázquez
A student in the Business Faculty in Extremadura, Inmaculada is undertaking a practical placement in Siemens-Nixdorf, Augsburg (D). Her work involves developing new information techniques in relation with information management and quality control.
Silvia Fernández Rodríguez
Graduated from the University of Oviedo, where she studied Nursing, Silvia has been accepted in the Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastrich (NL). She will be incorporated into hospital-based tasks and practical applications of new technologies in nursing orientated to preventative medicine.
Beatriz Aizpún Fernández
A graduate in Chemistry from Oviedo University, she will be in the Joint Research Centre of Ispra (I). She will work in relation with the study of inorganic ultratraces determination by high resolution inductively plasma mass spectrometry and the hyphenated techniques.
Jennifer Staddon
Jennifer, a student in Business Studies at the University of Northumbria at Carlisle (UK), has begun her practical placement in the TATIANA UETP. Her job is based in the area of Marketing, getting to know and developing the communication systems of the Association.
Juan Arguelles Luis
A post-graduate in Biology from the University of Oviedo, Juan has been accepted in the Physiological Laboratory, Cambridge (UK). During his stay hew will study all that is related with receptor analysis of the Angiotensin II.
TATIANA In Europe
As we have discussed in previous Newsletters, the UETP TATIANA has elaborated the RUBY project (Recycling and Updating in BiopathologY), of which actions are presented in addition to the LEONARDO programme and the European Iniciative ADAPT.
The European Commission approved the RUBYUNE-1 and RUBYUNE-2 projects with a total donation of 180.550 ECUs. We are waiting for the decision of ADAPT.
- RUBYUNE-1
With the objective of developing advanced methods for the training of professionals in biopathology this project oversees the following action lines requested to LEONARDO:
The requested lines of action that ADAPT can specify on:
i) Development of systems and training courses with continuous training courses for technicians and postgraduates.
- RUBYUNE-2
This programme of transnational mobilities, between universities and enterprises, includes the organisation and subvention of placements, for students or recent graduates with the aim of acquiring additional professional qualifications and bringing the University closer to the world of work and viceversa.
The NEWTON (New Technologies in Oncology) project was presented by TATIANA in the frame of the 3rd meeting of the ALFA (América Latina Formación Académica) programme. The aforementioned programme has been approved by the Scientific Committee and TATIANA has received the concession of two pre-projects, presented and defined in the following terms:
1. University - Enterprise Collaboration: NEWTON-UNEC
It is important to emphasise that these two Pre-projects have the same objective, to create the bases and the necessary mechanisms for the final editing of the project between Europe and Latin America in the frame of the next meeting of ALFA, of which the objective is to be the establishment of the Joint Project of Investigation, a Mobility System and the development of Support Services for training.
The financing from the Commission consists of 5000 ECUs for each Pre-project. These projects take into account the organisation of meetings, in which members of the NEWTON Network prepare a detailed training plan and organise a consensus in all aspects such as the pursued objectives.
We are glad to tell you that we have opened a new application for the presentation of projects for the LEONARDO Programme of which the final date of presentation is the 24th of May 1996.
In view of previous experiences, TATIANA offers its collaboration and support, to all the interested members in the preparation of iniciatives for the new application, the necessary informative documentation being in our offices.
The concession of the RUBYUNE-2 project, permitted us to set in motion, a programme of inter-exchanges for students in the final year of diploma and/or postgraduates, for the retraining and updating of biopathology.
The objective of these aids is to complete the theoretical academic education with a practical period and to approach the students to the business world and to the labour market.
We ask all members, departments and institutions for the maximum circulation of the existence of these grants and to send all the applications to our Association of the interested persons, to proceed in the selection of candidates.
As with other years, we have published an Annual Report for TATIANA. This includes all the information of the fulfilled activities of the Association during 1995, and an economic analysis comparative to the activities of the year.
