TRAINING ACTIONS

Another year that UETP, established in 1992, has continued its line of work - promoted, managed and financed through the European programme and its own financial sources, the organisation of several European training courses, seminars and meetings. The objective of these courses have been the rapid diffusion and application of research and development results between universities and enterprises in the field of new technologies.

In this period between January 1995 and January 1996, the following courses have been accomplished:

APPLICATION OF THE CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY IN PETROLOGY AND BIOMEDICINE
April 1995, Oviedo, SPAIN

Organised for the Spanish Society of Electronic Microscopy (S.E.M.E.) in collaboration with the University of Oviedo, the Central Hospital of Asturias and the Technical Institute for Materials of Asturias and financed partly by TATIANA-UETP to celebrate the past month of April, the XVII Biennial Meeting of the society.

The Committee organiser structured, with the help of full conferences, the "symposium" thematic with oral communication and "poster", as well as the explosive scientific material and parallel courses during the day.

Between the agreed themes, emphasised the relative of solid structure, new materials, conservation of the rock, animal and vegetable biology, neurosciences, biopathology and inmunocytochemistry.

The quality of the communication and the high standard of the speakers of the complete conference was exceptional of the organiser of this biennial.

STEREO SPRING/15th TATIANA EUROPEAN STEREOLOGY
April 1995, Curia, PORTUGAL

This course, financed partly by the TATIANA-UETP was held in the surroundings of the Hotel das Termas of Curia (Portugal). Carried out over 5 days, this theoretical and practical course included newer methods of measuring volume, surfaces, areas, systematic sampling techniques and the nucleate etc. With particular emphasis being given to new sampling principles and tools.

Seven instructors delivered a total of 37 hours tuition to 32 participants from different European countries.

DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING: FUNDAMENTALS AND APPLICATIONS
September 1995, Coventry, UNITED KINGDOM

Organised for the Department of Robotics and Machine Vision of the University of Coventry (UK), and partly financed by the UETP TATIANA, this course was directed at engineers, technicians and university students with experience in robotics and interest in the field of Image Processing. The course, of a practical nature, adopted a system of practical tutorials, making use of the well-developed computer package at the University of Coventry.

At the end of the course an evaluation was achieved, to detect the end grade of satisfaction of the participants in relation with the instructors, and their level of understanding and the future performance from their new training period.

At the end of the course, the participants were presented with a software package on Image Processing.

IV CONGRESS OF THE IBERIAN SOCIETY OF CYTOMETRY
May 1995, Oviedo, SPAIN

The Iberian Society of Cytometry celebrated, this past month of May, its fourth Congress. The appearance and application of new technologies such as Flow Cytometry, Image Analysis, Confocal Microscopy or the Hybridisation in place, in different fields of the Biomedical Science as Anatomy Pathology, Haematology, Immunology and Clinical Oncology, were made necessary by existing knowledge and education, this matter is not dealt with in ordinary Higher Education.

Conscious of this necessity and diligent use of the IV Congress of the Iberian Society of Cytometry (SIC), the University of Oviedo organised the Conference on methods of Analytical Cytology, in which the assistants were able to obtain an extended insight and update of these new fields of work and investigation.

During the 3 days of this physical Congress, the 150 participants were able to attend 3 conferences and 8 workshops. They presented a total of 110 communications.

The resume, with regard to all mentioned in the courses, conducted by TATIANA-UETP, and partly subsidised by the COMETT programme from January 1995 to January 1996 are presented in the following table:
