Arg-gly-glu-ser-Rho110 is a substrate of the closely related enzymes leukocyte elastase and pancreatic elastase. Leukocyte elastase is a serine protease that is a major component of neutrophil granules and is essential for phagocytosis and defense against infection by invading microorganisms. The tetrapeptide RGES is part of the sequence of fibronectin. Fibronectin is cleaved by human leukocyte elastase.
