I recommend that you consider biotinylation rather than a
fluorescent dye. We have shown that biotinylation labels
many cells with little or no change in their biology and
permits both their detection and their recovery if needed.
Our experience with the usual cell tracking dyes such as
PKH is that, unless carefully titrated, they often seriously
disturb the cell membranes - whereas biotinylation seems
quite harmless, and has all of the other properties that you
are seeking. See our paper and some of the references
