My two cents . . .
Forward angle scatter is, relatively speaking, a HUGE signal compared
to others we encounter in flow. Therefore, while we may perceive a
"significant" difference amongst cells microscopically, their FALS may
be unremarkable (e.g, stimulated lymphocytes which show large 90 degree
scatter changes while changing only slightly in FALS).
Also . . . intuitively, as a cell "swells" it may also change with respect
to refractive characteristics, and the net change is less than perhaps
expected.
