pH insensitive fluorescence?

We are using FITC-conjugated antibodies to cell surface antigens in a
project where we'd rather not have to worry about local pH changes
affecting the fluorescence intensity. Does anyone know of a
pH-independent fluorochrome we can use which can be excited at 488 nm?
We inquired of Molecular Probes; their recommendation is one of the
BODIPY's, but conjugation is tricky and it is very expensive.

While we're discussing pH, does anyone know of any data on the issue
of whether the pH within one IgG diameter of the membrane receptors
on a living cell differs from the bulk pH of the extracellular medium?
