Functional Parameters of Microplankton under
Different Grazing Conditions.

As part of TOP/DOWN projects the integrity of phyto- as well as
bacterioplankton (microplankton) has to be investigated during
biomanipulation according to grazing stress in two different views:
the biozinotical aspect and the individual aspect.
Using flow cytometry, structural and selected functional parameters
should be measured. Structural parameters such as different
photosynthetic pigment groups and protein content will be used to
define biomass spectra. The hyphothesis should be proved,
that a biomanipulation should distore the allometrical relation:
Abundance of organisms in one biomass group times biomass
remains constant
for all classes of biomass.
The functional parameters will be used to study the individual
microplanktic organisms. Membrane potential, enzyme activities
intracellular pH value and oxidative processes have to be studied to
get information about the mechanisms of adaption of microplankton
under different grazing stress by zooplankton.
The work has to be carried out in the Flow Cytometry Laboratory at
the GSF in Neuherberg (just outside Munich) and will scientifically
be supervised by Prof. Christion Steinberg (IGB-Berlin) and Dr.
Wolfgang Beisker (GSF-Neuherberg, Flow Cytometry Group). The flow
laboratory has two FACSTAR+ systems with up to three lasers, long
experience in flow technology, on algae and bacteria work.
