Your question concerning the new CAP question about
intrinsic/extrinsic is quite relevant to me as we have been discussing
this very question in our laboratory just this week. According to the
CAP Supplement to Flow Cytometry version 19970, this question relates
to the nonspecific binding of serum immunoglobulin by cells via Fc
receptors. As you should know a number of leukemia/lymphoma
samples have a high propensity for non-specific binding if run "neat". It
would seem that if your laboratory is taking the proper steps to reduce
this nonspecific binding (e.g. by blocking techniques or by coating with
protein) that your CAP inspector should be satsfied.
